Library Courtesy Policy

The Lyons Public Library has established certain standards for acceptable behavior of its patrons while in the library. This will allow us to maintain an atmosphere that promotes the use and enjoyment of the resources and services of the library; promotes the safety of the general public and library staff; and protects all aspects of the library.

Any activity that interferes with the rights of others to use the library, disrupts the normal functioning of the library, could damage the library facilities, equipment or materials or could result in physical, emotional, or mental injury to oneself or others is considered disruptive and unacceptable behavior.

The library staff reserves the right and the discretion, to require patrons who engage in disruptive or unacceptable behavior to leave the premises, to restrict the patron’s privileges for a specified period of time, or to ban the patron from the library for a specified period of time or permanently. Patrons requested to leave the premises who fail to do so will become trespassers and may be subject to citation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Department.

While in the library please:

1. Feel free to ask for help when you need it and let us know if the library does not provide what you are looking for;

2. Keep voices and audio equipment at a quiet, personal volume that does not disrupt others;

3. Turn phones off or set cell phones to vibrate, and use only in the foyer (downstairs) or outside;

4. Keep beverages in closed containers and away from all materials, including computers;

5. Clean up after yourself and your children by putting items back in their proper place before you leave;

6. Remove items taking up seating or creating an obstacle by placing them by the fireplace; ask staff for assistance if needed; and

7. Remember that the chairlift is for patrons with disabilities; it should never be used as a toy.

So that everyone may have a safe and enjoyable experience:

1. All children under 10 years of age must have a responsible individual 12 years or older remain with them during the visit;

2. Anyone suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or illegal substance will be asked to immediately leave the property;

3. Disorderly conduct, and/or harassment of patrons or staff, (including but not limited to unacceptable choices of activities, language or Internet viewing/listening options) will not be tolerated or allowed;

5. Animals are to remain outside (other than service animals) and under reasonable restraint;

6. Persons whose bodily hygiene is so offensive as to constitute a nuisance to others shall be required to leave until the problem is corrected.
